Panelist privacy FAQs

Effective date: May 2018
Privacy statements can be complicated and confusing. That’s why we’ve focused on answering some key questions about how Nielsen treats your data.
By joining the Nielsen board or participating in a company survey, we will send you a detailed privacy notice describing the information we collect, how we use it, and your legal rights. Below is a summary of the data that can be collected:
- Your contact details
- Names and some basic information about other members of your household, such as their age and gender
- Some demographic data, such as your education, age, and ethnicity (where permitted by local law)
- Data from Nielsen counters that can include TV, audio, web and mobile networks or a combination of them
- Your shopping habits
- Additional information with sources of third parties (including data brokers, where applicable) allowed by law to provide us with such information
Keep in mind that third-party data is collected in order to better understand how media usage or shopping habits are associated with demographic change. Usually we collect much less third party data referring to respondents who do not participate in Nielsen’s board.
We deeply appreciate your trust and protect the identity of our board members and respondents. We use tools and methods, including data aggregation, to ensure that there is no reasonable option to identify an individual from the data in the reports that we create for our customers. We will NOT use your information to advertise, promote, or market third-party products or services, nor allow our customers to use your identification data for direct advertising. You can receive third-party online ads that are partly based on data generated by the Nielsen Marketing Cloud platformor Nielsen Catalina Solutions, but this is not related to your participation in the Nielsen board. These products use data related to devices that grant certain preferences to Internet users. Remember, however, that we can link data from the Nielsen Marketing Cloud cookies with internet devices recognized by board members for Nielsen in order to improve our understanding of board preferences and behavior.
We also generate reports based on modeled information. “Modeled Information” means data that we have developed on the basis of demographic and behavioral characteristics, such as gender, age, TV viewing habits, and websites you visit to anticipate what people with similar or matching characteristics would look at or bought. We take precautionary measures into account in order to ensure that these data can not be redesigned and identified.
We use technical, physical and organizational security measures to protect your information. Because we are a data company, we take data protection very seriously.
In general, we want to collect information about your entire household when you conduct a Nielsen survey or join the company’s board. The data from your entire household helps to provide a more robust understanding of consumer behavior, which is in line with generally accepted market research methods.
We take privacy and childcare very seriously. If we collect information or opinions from children, we do so only with the consent of the child’s parent or guardian, who can be withdrawn at any time.

Nielsen explores what consumers watch and buy, and their wishes and behavioral habits. More than our customers know about consumers, it is easier to customize products and services to what you want and need.
We take the security of your directly identifiable personal information very seriously. We are a global market research company and we rely on relations with committee members and other research entities, so maintaining trust is crucial for us. We do not give your contact information to others to use them for your own purposes. If we collaborate with other companies in market research or develop new products, and if they need access to your contact information, they can only access them with our supervision and can not use them for their own purposes. They must also ensure that your information is confidential and secure.
No. The contact information you share with Nielsen will not be shared for promotional purposes.
Nielsen will retain the information for the following reasons:
- to know who in the past was a member of the committee;
- for legal reasons (eg taxes); in
- for quality support or security audits.
Access to the identification data of former committee members is very limited, even within Nielsen. De-identified information about former committee members is used for market research (eg tracking trends and changing consumer behavior over a period of years), or deliberately “melting” the data of current members of the committee to protect their identities. The data of former committee members can be stored for such purposes in their countries of origin or in other countries, in both cases using our privacy practices described in the relevant privacy statement and these frequently asked questions.
Simply contact us if you want to claim any of your legal rights regarding the information we have about you. If you are a former board member requesting the deletion of data, we will identify them and keep them for historical purposes in an unidentified form. If we have separate information about you from your identification data, we may not be able to provide you with data that has been de-identified.
