New Mobile Shopping and Banking Payment Report sheds light on consumers’ mobile behaviors around the world and how mobile devices are transforming retail, banking and entertainment.

For many consumers, mobile devices are a constant companion with powerful benefits. Among global respondents, 74% say they appreciate the freedom of being connected anywhere, anytime, and 70% strongly or somewhat agree that their mobile device has made their life better.

The world of commerce is being transformed as consumers use their mobile devices to conduct product research, look for deals or coupons and, increasingly, purchase goods and services from virtually any store from nearly anywhere in the world. Mobile devices are also transforming the banking and payments industry, creating more ways to save and pay than ever before.

The Nielsen Mobile Shopping, Banking and Payment Survey polled more than 30,000 online respondents in 60+ countries to understand how mobile devices are influencing three distinct yet interconnected activities: shopping, banking and payments. We examined the kinds of mobile shopping, banking and payment activities respondents are currently engaged in and their likelihood to participate in the future.

Nordic Key Findings of the Nielsen Mobile Shopping, Banking and Payment Report:

  • The Nordic countries, and especially Sweden, are ahead of the rest of Europe, and many other countries around the world, when it comes to adopting mobile banking and mobile transactions.

  • 42% of the Swedish consumers say they use their mobile device when shopping to compare prices, followed by Denmark (34%), Norway (27%) and Finland (25%).

  • Security concerns top the list of mobile-banking barriers in Sweden (35%) and in Denmark (28%), while 43% of the Norwegians and 35% of the Finns say they don’t have a need for mobile banking.

  • 28% of the Danish respondents are highly likely to use mobile payments in bars, restaurants or retail stores. This is the highest rate in Europe, and far above the European average (13%) and the other Nordic countries (Norway 16%, Sweden 14% and Finland 6%).

  • Danes also lead the way in mobile peer-to-peer money transfers, far above the global average.
