Business Resiliency Ensures Continuity

Business resiliency is the strategic alignment of business continuity and disaster recovery. Our Business Resiliency team works with mission-critical platforms to ensure that whenever any kind of incident occurs—whether it’s weather-related or man-made—platforms continue to function, or are able to recover as quickly as possible. Julia Wilson, Director, Global Responsibility & Sustainability, Nielsen, recently sat down with Edwin Katabaro, Program Director, Business Resiliency, Nielsen, to discuss how our strategic approach in this area has evolved over time.

“We’re being deliberate, and we’re working with teams to ensure they’re prepared as much as possible,” said Edwin. “It really aligns with Nielsen’s mission of measurement and improvement. We’re working with teams to improve the applications and services they provide, so our clients know that no matter what’s happening in the world—whether there is an incident or not—they can rely on our systems to be available.”

“The only way we can identify risks and mitigate those risks successfully is by doing it ahead of time and being proactive,” said Edwin. To that end, the Business Resiliency team uses tools like risk assessments to understand the potential effect of risks specific to a team, platform or organization to plan mitigation steps for minimizing the impact of risks. The team also employs business impact analyses to look at the key processes that take place within a platform or organization. Both exercises help ensure our strategies in these areas are comprehensive and coordinated.

Edwin also highlighted the importance of collaborating with teams across the organization, including Human Resources, Communications, Global Responsibility & Sustainability and others, to ensure we are all coordinated in our ongoing preparation and incident response plans. To that end, our Incident Management team is on point when a disaster does occur to ensure the right teams are taking action on any incident that may occur.

Looking forward, Edwin highlighted three pivotal aspects of our growth strategy for Business Resiliency at Nielsen:

  1. Maturing our program by continuing to work on our processes and our business resiliency framework;
  2. Embedding business continuity steps earlier on in the software development lifecycle to ensure teams are thinking about these issues during the design and requirements phase, instead of as an afterthought; and
  3. Building awareness across the organization about our business resiliency framework and the self-service tools that are available.
